[Class 38 (iv).] In an electric starting system for an internal-combustion engine of the compression - ignition type, closure of a switch M energizes windings G, 56 and 53, over a thermostatic latch switch H, the circuits of relays 56 and 53 also including a series cut-out D and a series thermostatic cut-out K energized by the voltage of the generator C, the winding G operating to permit opening and control of the throttle or fuel pump manually or from the engine governor, winding 56 closing the circuit of a winding N which operates a valve to reduce the compression space in the cylinder and winding 53 closing the circuit of the starting motor A. When the engine fires and comes up to speed the voltage of the generator C breaks the circuit of the windings 53, 56 and of the thermostatic latch 47 at 42 and also opens the thermal switch K at 44. Should the engine fail to start within a predetermined time the latch 47 is lifted and de-energizes all the circuits at 46. Restarting can then only be effected after manual closure of the latch switch 46. If the engine stalls during normal running, the switch 42 closes, but the time-lag in the closure of the switch 44 due to cooling thereof is such that the coil 49 is allowed to heat up and open the switch 46 before the switch 44 so that the starting circuits are de-energized and the fuel supply cut off.
