Abstract

515,213. Starting prime-movers. HILL, H. E., BURBIDGE, L., and BLACKSTONE & CO., Ltd. May 23, 1938, No. 15350. [Class 38 (iv)] An internal - combustion engine 11 is started by an electric motor 17 through the intermediary of an auxiliary engine 12. Closure of switch 30 or switch 28 energizes coil 24 to close contactor 34 and start motor 17 to crank engine 12. A fuel solenoid 20 for the engine 12 is energized simultaneously with coil 24. After an interval a relay 26 energized through switch 28 or 20, closes contacts 80 to energize a magnetic clutch 15 so that the main engine is cranked by the auxiliary engine. A fuel solenoid 21 for the engine 11, and a compression release solenoid 22 to facilitate starting are energized. Under normal conditions the main engine starts and centrifugal contacts 52 thereon open and de-energize coil 24, solenoid 20 and clutch 15. Thus stopping the motor. the auxiliary engine and frees the clutch 15. After a delay, relay 25 opens contacts 83 to de-energize the compression release solenoid 22 so that the engine 11 runs normally. If, however, the main engine does not start a time-delay relay 27, energized through closed contacts 52 and switch 28 or 30, opens its contacts 47 to deenergize coil 24 and stop the motor 17. If relay 27 operates, it also closes contacts 70 to light a warning lamp 29. Contacts 70 may also initiate the starting of a second engine when they close. The main engine stops when the switch 28 or 30 is opened for the fuel solenoid is then de-energized. The switch 30 may be operated manually, by a relay, or by a float or other device which responds to an external condition. The battery 18 may be kept charged by a trickle-charger 19 or the starting motor may act as a generator, when the engine is in operation, to charge the battery and, incidentally, provide energization for its magnetic clutch. 15.
