Abstract
535,438. Supplying sump vapours to charge. ANNESLEY, G. Dec. 16, 1939, No. 32364. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] The supply of sump vapours to the induction pipe is controlled by a valve 11 actuated by a plunger 12 and electromagnetic coil 14 supplied from the engine dynamo through a relay switch which cuts off the supply of current to the coil 14 when the engine is idling, owing to the reduced voltage from the dynamo. As soon as the engine attains a pre-determined speed, the dynamo voltage is sufficient to close the relay, switch and supply current to the coil 14 to open the valve. A thermostat may be included in the circuit so as to prevent the valve from opening until the engine reaches a certain temperature. The sump vapours may be heated on their way to the induction pipe by strapping the pipe through which they pass to the exhaust pipe, or by forming it into a coil within the exhaust pipe or within a box communicating therewith, or by passing the vapours through a chamber secured to the exhaust pipe and fitted with baffles. The casing of the valve 11 may be integral with the carburetter or induction manifold, with its outlet pipe 8 forked so as to supply the vapours to opposite sides of the induction pipe, if desired tangentially. In a modification, the stem of the valve 11 may pass through the plunger 12 with some axial lost motion, so that the plunger initially moves alone and attains some momentum before striking a stop on the valve stem to lift it.
