Abstract
211,279. Fisk, E. T. Dec. 11, 1922. Starting; turning-gear.-A priming charge of petrol or the like is delivered by gravity from a container 7, Fig. 1, to a priming chamber 5 by a valve 11 actuated by an electromagnet 20. The chamber 5 is connected to the induction pipe or the cylinder heads. The valve is normally closed' by a spring 17, and is opened by the action of the electromagnet on an armature 13 on the valve stem. In a modification, Fig. 3, the interval between the opening and closing of the valve 11 is controlled by a dashpot 50. When the switch arm 36 is moved on to a contact 34, current is supplied to a solenoid 53, the core 52 of which carries the dashpot piston 51. An extension 54 on the core 52 carries a contact 55 which completes the circuit 37, 37<1> of the electromagnet 20. The switch 36 is then moved off the contact 34 until the circuit 37, 37<1> is opened, after which it is moved on to a contact 35 closing the circuit of a dynamo 33, which is used as a motor for starting the engine. The switch contacts may be so arranged that, on stopping the engine, a further petrol charge is admitted to the engine, leaving a rich mixture in the engine and tending to reduce carbonization. In a further form, the closing of the valve 11 is affected by a float in the chamber 5, which opens the circuit of the electromagnet controlling the valve when the desired quantity of petrol has been admitted to the chamber.
