Abstract

534,000. Auxiliary-air admission devices. CLOWES, S. S. Dec. 16, 1939, No. 32353. [Class 7 (ii)] An auxiliary-air admission device comprises an air chamber 13 connected at 16 to the induction pipe 12 and having one or more airinlet ports 17 controlled by a sliding valve 18 and formed so as to provide a progressively increasing rate of opening in relation to the movement of the valve ; the chamber contains a piston 21 for operating the valve and an electromagnet 30 keeps the valve closed at low engine speeds but permits it to open above a pre-determined engine speed. As shown, the chamber 13 is a tube provided with air-inlet ports 17 increasing progressively in size, and the valve 18 is a sleeve mounted on a rod 20 passing in gastight manner through a partition 33 and carrying the piston 21, which is normally held in the position shown by a light spring 22. To enable the piston 21 to be actuated by engine suction, a pipe 28 leading to the induction pipe is fitted with a suction-actuated valve 24, and a vent 34 is provided in the tube 13 behind the piston. The electromagnet 30 acts upon a core 31 secured to the rod 20. and is connected to the ignition and generator circuit of the engine, so that the valve 18 is prevented from opening the ports 17 until the engine speed is sufficient and the throttle valve 15 is partly closed. In a modification, the electromagnet acts on the valve 24 and holds it closed until the engine speed reaches a sufficient value.
