Abstract

542,341. Extra-air valves. CLOWES, S. S. Jan. 4, 1941, No. 155. [Class 7 (ii)] An auxiliary air-inlet device comprises a piston valve 35 opened by engine suction acting at 20, and closed by an electromagnet 29, the core 42 of which is connected to the valve, the magnet being de-energized when the engine exceeds a predetermined speed, or when the throttle is moved from its closed position, and the valve being formed with ports 38 which cooperate with air-inlet ports 17, 18 in the valve casing, the ports 17 being helically arranged and of progressively increasing size. The suction action may be modified by adjustment of a screw 27 in a byepass 21. The opening of the valve is limited by a stop 34 engaging the core and adjusted by a screw 32. The magnet may be de-energized by a switch actuated by the throttle control, or when the engine speed reaches that at which the generator is cut in. Specification 534,000 is referred to.
