Abstract
514,670. Timing ignition. ARNOTT, F. H. Feb. 2, 1938, No; 3204. [Class 7 (iv)] The ignition of a super-charged internalcombustion engine is retarded or advanced by the change in pressure in the induction pipe which is connected by a pipe 6a to a chamber closed by a diaphragm piston or the like 3, the other side of the' diaphragm being subject to atmospheric pressure, e.g. through a hole 2c. The diaphragm has fixed to it a rod 7 linked at 8 to a rod 9 that operates the timing lever 11. Movement is limited in one direction by the engagement of a part' 16 with a fixed member 17 and in the other direction by the engagement of a collar 12 with a fixed member 14. A spring 13 acts against the pressure in the chamber. The arrangement may be such that ignition is adjusted by variation in pressure both above and below atmospheric or it may respond only to pressure above atmospheric. In the latter case a separate chamber may advance the ignition when pressure falls below atmospheric. The chamber may have a vent which may be controlled so as to open the chamber to the atmosphere when the throttle is nearly closed and the engine is idling.
