Abstract

523,583. Speed governors. C. A. V., Ltd., and NICOLLS, W. E. W. Jan. 7, 1939, No. 615. [Class 57] A governor for an engine of the Diesel type comprises two co-axial diaphragms c, d, or pistons mounted in a suction-chamber a, the diaphragm c being connected to the controlling-rod l and having lost-motion engagement with the diaphragm d, preferably by means of a headed rod f, and a sleeve g provided with a cap h. The diaphragms are urged apart by a spring k, and the diaphragm d abuts on another opening m and can engage a damping- device consisting of a pin n supported by an adjustable spring o. The suction-arrangement preferably comprises Venturis s, r which communicate with the air-induction pipe q, and through tubes u, v with the chamber a, the Venturi r being provided with a valve t. At normal speeds, the valve is open, and the suction between the diaphragms causes the diaphragm c to move the rod l in the direction for reducing fuel-supply. Moreover, the spring k moves the diaphragm d into contact with the damping device n, and the last-motion device then permits the diaphragm c to move independently and without interference from the damping- device of the diaphragm d. At slow speeds, the valve t is closed, and since no suction is created between the diaphragms, these separate to take up the lost-motion, the controlling-rod is moved only by the diaphragm d.
