Abstract

461,077. Ignition timing. TRIGGS, W. W. (Moore Inventions Corporation) Aug. 9, 1935. No. 22493. [Class 7 (iv)] The ignition timing is varied according to changes in induction pipe suction or exhaust pressure through a cam shaped to effect retardation while the engine is idling, to afford a maximum advance under light loads, and an advance from a retarded position with increasing speed under full load operation. A plunger 24 works in a cylinder 18 in communication with the induction pipe. Two springs 28, 30, one coming into action after the other, oppose the suction, interlacing of the springs being prevented by an intervening sleeve 32. The piston rod forms a rack engaging a toothed quadrant 44 fixed to the same spindle as a disc having a cam-groove 60. Alternatively, the groove may be formed in the quadrant itself. The groove is engaged by a roller carried by a pivoted lever 62 connected to the ignition circuit interrupter mechanism. In a modification, the end of the rack within the closed end of the casing 50 is also formed with a piston, suction created within the airtight space between this second piston and the closed-end serving to supplement the action of a single spring around the rack in opposing that of the induction pipe suction on the main piston.
