Abstract
839,971. Regulating; valve gear. JAWDAT, N. A. Aug. 7, 1956 [May 5, 1955], No. 13115/55. Class 7(6) An axially adjustable camshaft 11 is provided with a pair of cams 14, 15, associated with each push rod 19, the valve tappets 21 being provided with balls 25 comprising cam followers which engage in grooves in the faces of the cams 14, 15, which grooves are interconnected by a helical groove 16 by which the follower moves from one cam to the other when the cam shaft is moved axially. The shaft may be moved by manual means or by governor means responsive to intake manifold pressure or engine speed. The cam shaft is positively located in its correct positions for operating with the cams 14 or the cams 15 by spring- loaded balls 27 engaging grooves 31, 32 in the shaft. One cam profile of each pair may be designed to give a longer valve timing overlap for maximum torque at medium engine speeds and the other minimum overlap for idling speeds.
