Abstract

408,539. Starting; stopping. CHANCE BROS. & CO., Ltd., and SPAINK, J. H. ABBINK-, Glass Works, Smethwick, Birmingham. Oct. 24, 1933, No. 29413. [Class 7 (v).] To facilitate starting by means of an electric motor, means for holding open the exhaust or other valve is provided with spring- actuated mechanism for bringing the holding means into action when the engine comes to rest, and electromagnetic mechanism, acting through a spring, for moving the valve-holding means out of action when the engine picks up speed at starting. The valve-holding means (not shown) is operated by levers p, Fig. 2, acted upon by springs q and connected through springs r to levers s on a shaft t, which is connected by a lever u and a link o to an electromagnet n controlled by a centrifugal switch j. A dynamo b serving as a starting motor is supplied from a battery c through an electromagnetic switch e controlled by a hand switch d. If the engine fails to start within a certain time, switches g, h actuated by a thermal or other time-lag device break the circuit of the coil f of the switch e. Normally, however, on the engine attaining sufficient speed, the centrifugal switch breaks the circuit of the switches g, h and closes the circuit of the electromagnet n, the armature of which acts on the valve-holding means through the members o, u, t, s and the springs r. When, due to the rotation of the engine, the normal spring pressure acting on each of the exhaust valves is released from the holding devices of the valve-actuating mechanism, the springs r rock the levers p to move the holding devices to the inoperative position, allowing the valves to close in the normal manner. The fuel pump s is also put into action by the release of a pump valve z by a lever y connected by a link x to one of the levers s. The engine is stopped by opening the switch d, whereby the magnet n is de-energized, so that the fuel pump s is put out of action and the valve-holding devices are brought into action by the springs q. In modifications, (1) the valve of the fuel pump is controlled by a separate electromagnet under the control of the switch j ; (2) a separate electromagnet is provided for each of the valve-holding devices and for the fuel-pump valve.
