Abstract

381,263. Starting prime movers. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. July 22, 1931, No. 20942. Convention date, July 26, 1930. [Class 38 (iv).] In a combined starting and ignition system, for internal, combustion engine, operation of the lockswitch 28 closes a circuit from the battery 10 to the solenoid 26. The main starting switch 19, 20, 21 is thereby closed and current supplied to the starting motor SM. A branch circuit 36 causes the movement of a pivoted arm 47 and brings together contacts 46, 52 closing the ignition circuit from the battery through the coil 54 to the interrupter 44. The action of the windings 36 is opposed by the winding 22 in the main starting-motor lead, thus keeping closed the contacts 31, 32 in the circuit of the solenoid 26. As the load on the starting motor decreases current in the winding 36 increases, and is supplemented by current from the generator G flowing in a winding 40. The contacts 31, 32 separate, breaking the circuit through solenoid 26 with consequent breakage of the main starter circuit at the contacts 19, 20, 21. The action of the coils 36, 40 on the pivoted arm 47 may be supplemented by a second pivoted arm 57 acted on by the solenoid 26. Locking of the switch 28 earths the generator circuit through a lead 42, arm 28b, and connection 43, while the interrupter 44 is also short-circuited at the contacts 46, 51. The casing 17, the sheaths 60, 61 and the casings of the interrupter 44 and lock-switch 28 are made of highly-resistant material for preventing unauthorized use of the apparatus.
