Abstract

1299593 Starting prime movers JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 13 April 1970 [12 May 1969] 24054/69 Heading H2H An engine starting system comprises an electric circuit having means for breaking the circuit when the engine speed is above a predetermined value together with delay means operable when the engine speed falls below the predetermined speed to maintain the circuit broken for a predetermined time. To start the engine a switch 25 is closed thereby illuminating a warning lamp 30 from a battery 5, the battery voltage being applied to a Zener diode 21 causing it to break down to turn on transistor 15. Switch 13 is now closed to energize a relay winding 14 by way of the transistor 15, the contacts 17 of the relay closing to energize the starting solenoid to start the engine. As soon as the engine starts an alternator 6 produces an output thus extinguishing the lamp 30, the alternator output being applied to a diode pump circuit 29, 31, 33 to produce a voltage across a variable resistor 34 which increases with increasing engine speed, this voltage being applied to the base of a transistor 22. When the base voltage reaches a given value at a predetermined engine speed transistor 22 conducts to turn off transistor 15 so de-energizing relay 14 and hence the starting solenoid 18. Should the engine speed fall the voltage across the resistor 34 falls and transistor 22 will tend to turn off. A capacitor 36 which has been charged by way of a diode 35 will however maintain the transistor 22 conductive for a time sufficient to allow the engine speed to fall to zero. Thus it will not be possible to re-energize relay 14, and hence starting solenoid 18, until a predetermined time after the engine speed has fallen below the predetermined value.
