Abstract

1,260,062. Control systems for starting and running prime movers. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 30 July, 1970 [4 Aug., 1969], No. 36909/70. Heading H2H. A motor vehicle having an I.C. engine and a fuel pump is provided with an electrical control circuit which is arranged to control the pump so that the fuel delivered thereby is at a lower rate when the engine is operating at low speeds than that when the engine is operating at high speeds. The electrical control circuit is provided with an ignition switch 14 having contacts 34-44 and four operative positions, the switch positions and contact settings being tabulated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. At starting the contacts 40, 42, 44 close thus the positive battery feed 56 supplies the ignition circuit over contact 40, the engine cranking means over contact 42 and the fuel pump 10 over contact 44. Closure of contact 40 also causes a generator tell-tale lamp 120 to be illuminated by way of normally closed contacts 122, 118 in a voltage regulator assembly 76. When the engine is running the switch 14 is returned to the ON position in which contacts 38, 40 are closed. The output of the alternator/rectifier, assembly 74 appears on line 102 to charge the battery 12 and to energize line 56. The relay coil is energized from a terminal 131 in the rectifier bridge 88 to close contacts 122, 120. The output voltage of the assembly 74 then appears on both terminals of the lamp 20 which extinguishes. With the engine running a switch 24, operated by the engine oil. pressure, closes to energize the fuel pump 10 by way of a network 48. At low throttle settings a switch 64 remains open so that the pump 10 is energized over a resistor 62 so that the fuel delivery rate is low. At high throttle settings the switch 64 closes whereby the pump 10 is fully energized to give a high fuel delivery rate. During starting with a flooded engine, a high throttle setting opens a switch 50 so de-energizing the pump 10 to assist starting. The voltage of the alternator 80 is regulated by the contacts 110, 112, 114 of a relay 108 and a resistor 124. The tell-tale network 22 includes two further lamps 140, 142, the lamp 140 indicating a cold engine and being energized by means of a bimetal switch 146, the lamp 142 indicates an overheated engine Accessory loads 26-32 are supplied over contact 38.
