Abstract

147,812. British Thomson-Houston Co., (Assignees of Bergman, S. R.). Jan. 16, 1917, [Convention date]. Exciting; pole - pieces, cores, and yokes.-A dynamo 10 serving as a motor for starting an engine 17 and afterwards as an engine-driven generator for battery charging and lighting, has a two-part series field winding, the part 20 consisting of a few turns of low resistance and the part 21 consisting of a larger number of turns of higher resistance. The part 20 is used alone for motoring and both parts in series for generating. A shunt coil 13 is also provided. At starting, the winding 20 is connected to the battery 14 by a. switch 23 actuated by hand or foot. When the engine starts and attains sufficient speed, the electromotive force across the armature brushes 11 rises and a coil 30 connected across these brushes receives sufficient current to close a switch 25 connecting the high-resistance winding 21 in series with the winding 20 and the battery through a coil 31, which holds the switch 25 closed as long as the engine speed is sufficient. In a modification, the winding 21 is in two or more parts, one or more of which may be connected to the switch 25 by a hand switch. In order to neutralize the armature reaction, the field winding may comprise a number of spaced conductors 20<c> connected to a single group of return conductors 20<e>, Fig. 5, the conductors being wound in slots in laminated pole-pieces of the kind described in Specification 104,197. In a modification, the conductors are wound in slots in the inner periphery of the pole-pieces. Specification 147,807 also is referred to.
