Abstract

110,421. Midgley, A. H., and Vandervell & Co., C. A. Nov. 3, 1916. Machines with two or more armatures; exciting. -A dynamo-electric machine for use in connexion with internal-combustion engines &c. has a stationary field magnet and two armatures a, d, the armature d being fixed inside the armature a so that they rotate together and the field-magnet flux can pass through both armatures. The armature a may be used to generate current for lighting, or it may serve as a motor armature to start the engine; the armature d is a standard magneto armature fitted with primary and secondary coils e, f for ignition purposes. The commutator and brushes pertaining to the armature a are arranged at one end of the shaft of the machine, and the interrupter, distributor, &c. pertaining to the armature d are placed at the other end of the shaft. Slots n are provided in the armature a. The field magnet may be provided with divided poles l, m having extended pole-shoes which may be fixed or movable in the circumferential direction; intermediate regulating-poles p and regulating commutator brushes may be provided. The field-magnet coils s may be connected to the battery by a separate switch so that, by interrupting the fieldmagnet circuit, the armature d may be rendered inoperative and the engine stopped.
