Magneto-electric machines.-The field-magnet of a magneto for igniting in internalcombustion engines on motor - vehicles &c. is composed of one or more steel disks 5, Figs. 1 and 2, secured to the hub of the flywheel 4. The disks have long radial limbs 6 which are magnetized to give poles 7 of alternate polarity. The stationary armature consists of an iron ring 13 secured by extensions 14 and having a series of soft-iron cores 15, which are wound with coils 18 and are provided with peripheral flanges 17 extending over the fieldmagnet. Fig. 3 shows a diagram of the igniting-circuits arranged for a four-cylinder engine, the armature coils 18 being connected in series, and the sparking-plugs 33 being in circuit with the secondary windings 34 of induction-coils. A primary battery 21 supplies the current for starting the engine, and it is cut into or out of circuit by a switch 22. The primary windings 23 of the induction-coils are in circuit with the distributor 24 and with an electro-magnetic interrupter 29.
