662,737. ignition magnetos. HORNUNG, A. Sept. 15, 1948 [Dec. 19, 1944], No. 24171/48. Class 35. In a flywheel magneto of the rotating magnet type, the low-voltage ignition winding 4 is also used intermittently to supply current for lighting &c. by assisting another additional winding 4<SP>1</SP> when the winding 4 is not used to produce ignition. Fig. 1 shows two contact breakers 8, 9 actuated by cams 6, 7 respectively. The breaker 8 controls contacts 11 to break the current in the ignition coil primary winding 4 to produce a high voltage in the secondary windings 5. The other breaker 9 controls contacts 14, 15 which connects and disconnects the winding 4 to and from the lighting &c. circuit 13. The construction of the cams 8, 9 is such that the arm 8 has only a short closure period while the arm 9 has a long closure period. The ignition coil primary winding 4 and the additional winding 4<SP>1</SP> are separately mounted on stator cores 3 and 3<SP>1</SP> respectively. The flywheel rotor has permanent magnets 1 and iron cores 2 mounted on the outside as shown in Fig. 1, but it may be modified so as to place the permanent magnets inside the windings. In a modification, only one cam is used which is arranged to operate a lever controlling three pairs of contacts by which the winding 41 is intermittently used for ignition and lighting purposes. This winding 4<SP>1</SP> is connected in series with the other primary winding 4 for a longer period than in the first case.
