Description

so, 1924. 115M437 J. BOHLI! ELECTRIC IGNITION APPARATUS FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed April 1. 1924 isiaai ear no.
JACQUES BOHLI, or sono'rmmu, swI'rzERLANn, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM SCINT'ILLA,
. or SOLO'IHURN, SWITZERLAND.
ELECTRIC IGNITION AIPPAIRALTUS FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed April 1, 1924. Serial No. 703,561.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACQUES BoHLI, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, residing at No. 304 Obach, Solothurn, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Electric Ignition Apparatus for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a. specification.
In magneto-ignition apparatuses it has already been proposed to use electro-magnets in place of the permanent magnets usually employed hitherto, and to excite such electro-magnets with current from a battery. With such an arrangement, the starting of the engineis effected by simply switching the bafttery current into the primary winding 0 the ignition apparatus by means of the interrupter, so that for this purpose the apparatus Works temporarily' with battery-ignition.
That arrangementhas many advantages from an economical and technical point of view, since, more particularly when the battery has nearly run down, a few hundredths of the normal battery voltage are suflicient to produce and maintain an efieetive igniting spark.
The present invention has for its object to enable the lowest speed of rotation at which an efi'ective igniting spark can still be produced with the aforesaid arrangement, to be still further considerably reduced, and thus facilitate the starting of the engine. With this object" an improved apparatus is provided according to the present invention, so designed, that when the interrupter (operated mechanically from the shaft of the ignition apparatus) is open, not .merely one single spark, but each time a whole series of igniting sparks will be produced in rapid succession.
This object is achieved by inserting in the exciting circuit of the electromagnets of the ignition apparatus an automatic electro-magnetic buzzer, that is, an automatic interrupter of the st 1e of a Wagner hammer, which opens and clbses the exciting current circuit of the electro-magnets in rapid succession so long as the interrupter of the ignition apparatus (controlled mechanically from the shaft of the engine being started) is open.
A constructionalform of an ignition apparatus embodying the improvements of this invention is illustrated by way of examcoil, and have their direction reversed at each half-revolution of the armature.
()n the core f are located the primary winding p and the secondary winding 8 of the ignition coil. 9 is the interrupter located in the usual way in the circuit of the primary Winding p, and la is the condenser connected in parallel with the said interrupter. h is the sparking plug located in the circuit of the secondary winding 8.
According to the present invention a buzzer Z operating electro-magnetically after the style of a Wagner hammer, is located in the circuit of the exciting winding 6. The contacts n and 0 of the said buzzer interrupt the exciting current in rapid successionfand thereby generate, not merely one single spark, but a whole series of sparks so long as the interrupter g (operated mechanically by a tappet) remains open.
m is a three-waychange-over switch. By
the engine. In position 3 of the switch m,
the engine having been started, the buzzer is by-passed, and the exciting current can flow from the battery directly into the ex citing windin b. 1 i
What I clalm is I 1. An electric ignition apparatus for in ternal combustionengines lncluding a pair of yoke members, a stationary iron core connecting said yoke members and on which are mounted the usual primary and secondary windings, a make and break device operated mechanically by the engine and associated in the usual manner with said primary Winding, a sparking plug in series with said secondary Winding, an iron rotor and an electric circuit comprising in series connection a magnetizing coil on said rotor, a battery and a buzzer.
2. An electric ignition apparatus as claimed in claim 1, including means adapted to short circuit the buzzer at will, said means including a change-over switclrand electrical connections thereto.
3. An electric ignition apparatus claimed in claim 1, including means adapted to short circuit the buzzer or break the said series connection to the battery at will, said means including a change-over switch and electrical connections thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JACQUES BoHLI.
