Abstract

238,660. British Lighting & Ignition Co., Ltd., and Hutton, J. C. June 23, 1924. Exciting; pole-pieces, cores, and yokes.-In a dynamo for giving a substantially constant output at varying speeds and having the wound fieldmagnet poles divided into two sections a<1>, a<2>, each pole is provided with a large coil e embracing the two sections and connected between an auxiliary brush A and the more distant of the two main brushes M<1>, and the leading section a<1> is provided with a small coil c connected across the main brushes. Instead of using a single large coil e, separate windings connected in series or in parallel across an auxiliary brush and a main brush may be provided on each section. The large coils e may be connected to separate auxiliary brushes. A multipolar machine is described in which the large coils are connected in series between a main brush and an auxiliary brush, and the small coils are connected across separate pairs of main brushes. In a modification, the machine has only one wound divided pole, the other polebeing formed in the yoke of the machine. The outer tips of the pole parts are preferably longer than the inner tips, and the inner tips may touch or they may be constituted by an integral strip of relatively high magnetic reluctance.
