Abstract

147,807. British Thomson - Houston Co., (Assignees of Bergman, S. R.). Jan. 16, 1917, [Convention date]. Exciting; pole-pieces, cores, and yokes.-A dynamo-electric machine, particularly for use as a motor for starting an internal-combustion engine and as a generator for battery charging and lighting, has a series field-winding comprising a number of spaced conductors 22 connected to a single group of return conductors 24, the spaced conductors 22 serving to neutralize the armature reaction and the single group of conductors 24 to produce the magnetizing-field at right-angles to the armature field. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the field winding is assembled in the magnetic members 21, and these members are then secured to the magnetic ring 20 as described in Specification 104,197. The spaced conductors 63, Fig. 11, may be distributed in slots in the pole-face so as to neutralize completely the armature field. In the application of the invention to engine-starting and battery-charging, shunt windings 33, 39 surrounding the field poles are also provided, the two windings being connected between an auxiliary brush 29 and the main brushes 37, 38 as shown. The two shunt windings act in opposition to each other both when motoring and generating. The relative directions of the magnetizations produced by the various field windings are indicated by full-line arrows for motoring conditions and by dotted-line arrows for generating conditions.
