Abstract

184,889. Midgley, A. H. May 23, 1921. Exciting.-In order to maintain constant the output of dynamo-electric machines at varying speeds, the field magnet is provided with a subdivided pole, and the winding on the rearward part of the subdivided pole is supplied with current at approximately constant voltage while the field winding of the forward part is supplied with current from the conductors lying under the poleface of the rearward part. In the two-pole machine shown, each pole is subdivided. The field windings on the rearward parts a<1>, b of the poles are connected across the main brushes c, d, while the field windings on the forward parts a, b<1> are connected across the brushes d, f and c, e respectively. The invention is particularly applicable to dynamos for train lighting or for use on motor vehicles and motor boats.
