Abstract

506,664. Self-contained supply systems; exciting dynamo-electric machines. SOMERVILLE, T. B., WILLIAMSON, A. G., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 1, 1937, No. 33267. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] In an engine-driven generator set fo: emergency lighting and other purposes wherein a generator o exciter therefor is driven by an engine which is started by a motor supplied from a storage battery or other source of current, either the series field winding 2 of the generator or exciter, or preferably, as shown, a field winding 2a which is separate from the series field 2, is adapted to be connected in circuit with the battery 8 and starter motor 5, so that during starting the initially high motor current flows through the field winding 2a, thereby causing the generator voltage to build up rapidly. Field forcing may be provided, in addition, by short circuiting during the starting operation the rheostat 9 in the shunt field circuit of the generator, the winding being so proportioned that when giving the ampere turns normally required a relatively small proportion, for example 60 per cent of the generator terminal voltage is absorbed in the winding, the remainder being absorbed in the rheostat.
