Dynamos, regulating; exciting.-To prevent batteries from being overcharged by dynamos having armature-reaction controlling-devices involving the use of a third or auxiliary brush, an alteration in the field windings between the main brushes is automatically effected to reduce the output of the dynamo upon the attainment of a predetermined voltage by the battery and the dynamo, and means are also provided for the restoration of the output of the dynamo to its full value when a load is switched on to the battery. In the arrangement shown, a field coil f<2> is normally connected between the main brushes but is adapted to be cut out by a switch a, bf which is operated by an electromagnet energized by a coil S' when the battery B is nearly fully charged. Before the connection of the coil f<2> is broken, a resistance R is connected in parallel with it to prevent high voltage from being induced. Instead of cutting out the winding f<2> an opposing winding may be cut in, or sections of the winding may be changed from a parallel to a series arrangement. When a lamp T or other load is switched on to the battery, a coil S<2> opposing the coil S<1> again closes the switch a, b to restore the output of the dynamo.
