Abstract
In engine starting apparatus the motor includes a yoke 18 and a plurality of polepieces each having one end rounded, adjacent polepieces having their rounded ends at opposite axial ends of the yoke. The field system of the motor consists of a single field coil 17 extending around the inside of the yoke and shaped to define portions which extend substantially axially relative to the yoke and are joined by curved end portions which extend around the rounded ends of the polepieces. At least one of the polepieces has a part 19a, 21a fixed relative to the yoke and including the rounded end and a movable part 19b, 21b resiliently urged away from the fixed part in a direction parallel to the motor shaft. The apparatus further includes means 28, 29 connecting the movable part to the pinion, the arrangement being such that when the field system of the motor is energized the movable part will be attracted by the fixed part and the pinion will be moved from its inoperative position to its operative position. The fixed and movable parts of the polepieces may be formed with complementary inter-engaging faces of part conical form.
