Abstract
992,727. Starting I.C. engines. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. June 17, 1963 [June 25, 1962], No. 24269/62. Heading F1K. [Also in Division H2] In an I.C. engine starter in which a solenoid 16 acts through a lever 14 pivoted about an axis fixed relative to the motor to move a pinion 9 into engagement with a wheel 10, a spring 20 between the lever and the armature 17 allows the motor switch 26 to be closed in the event of tooth to tooth engagement of the pinion and wheel. When the solenoid is energized armature 17 moves a contact 27 through a hollow push rod 28 to bridge fixed contacts 26 thereby energizing part of the motor field. Lever 14 moves collar 12 and uni-directional clutch 8 axially thus causing pinion 9 to be rotated by screw thread 13 as it moves into engagement with wheel 10. A push rod 30 bridges a second pair of contacts (not shown) to energize the remaining part of the motor field. If the solenoid 16 is not energized and friction prevents disengagement of the pinion teeth, a lost-motion spring 24 compresses to allow spring 20 to move the armature thus opening both switches to de-energize the motor. In a modification the contact 27 controls the entire motor field system.
