Abstract

1,202,713. Electromagnetic switches. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 9 Feb., 1968 [14 Feb., 1967], No. 7004/67. Heading H1N. A switch for use with the starter motor of an internal-combustion engine has three fixed contacts, the first and second of which are engaged before the first and third are bridged by a resiliently urged contact bridge on an axially movable control rod. Energization of a solenoid not shown, moves two armatures 32, 33 toward a polepiece 13 which forms part of a contact casing 11. The contact bridge 21, which is spring urged against an angled face 18a of an insulator 18 on the rod 15 is first brought into engagement with fixed contacts 24, 25 and then pivots about these contacts until it also engages contact 26. Contacts 24, 25 are in the "low torque" circuit. of the starter motor and contacts 24, 26 in the "high torque" circuit of the motor. A pin 15a on the rod 15 extends in a slot 14a in a sleeve 14 and the backing spring 22 for the contact bridge 21 acts between washers 22a, 23 (the latter being insulating) against the bridge 21 and sleeve 14. The part 33 is coupled to a pinion (not shown) which when the part is moved on solenoid energization engages a toothed wheel to couple the starter motor to the engine. If tooth to tooth engagement occurs the rod 15 is not moved by the part 33 but the part 32 engages the end of the sleeve 14 to close only contacts 24, 25 so that the engine is driven at "low torque" until the teeth engage and part 33 moves to drive the rod 15 and complete the contact movement.
