Abstract

1303437 Starting prime movers JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 21 Sept 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 48905/69 Heading H2H An engine starting mechanism comprises a starter motor 11 having a low power field winding 13 and main field windings 12. A pinion 15, mounted on a shaft 14 rotatable by the motor 11, is movable into engagement with a toothed wheel 16 of the engine to be started by an electromagnetic device including windings 19, 21. When a starter switch 32 is closed the windings 19, 21 are energized so that a plunger 23 is retracted against the bias of a spring 24. A pivoted arm 17 therefore moves the pinion into engagement with the wheel 16 and a contact 26 bridges contacts 27, 28 to supply power to the low power winding 13. Simultaneously, the contact 26 connects contacts 29, 27 thus energizing a relay coil 33, which after a delay due to its inductance, closes contacts 34-36 to supply power to the main windings 12 thereby energizing the motor at full power. The initial low power drive enables the pinion to be properly meshed with the wheel 16 before the full power drive is applied to the pinion.
