Abstract

1514710 Starters for internal combustion engines LUCAS ELECTRICAL CO Ltd 4 Sept 1975 [27 Sept 1974] 42052/74 Heading F1K The invention relates to starters for internal combustion engines including an electric motor, a pinion gear-wheel assembly (not shown) driven by the motor and electromagnetic means for moving the pinion gear-wheel assembly from a rest position to an operative position, the electromagnetic means including an armature 13 coupled to the pinion gear-wheel assembly. According to the invention there is provided means whereby the electric motor can be energized in response to the armature 13 reaching a position corresponding to the operative position of the pinion gear-wheel assembly and the armature is capable of movement relative to the pinion gear-wheel assembly in the event that the electromagnetic means is energized and the pinion gear-wheel is prevented from moving towards its operative position, there being provided further means responsive to such relative movement whereby the motor can be energized even though the armature has not reached the position corresponding to the operative position of the pinion gear-wheel assembly. If the pinion gear-wheel engages the ring gear (not shown) of the engine in a tooth to tooth abutment condition the armature 13 continues to move as permitted by a compression spring 18. Immediately the contact ring 17 abuts the washer 15 the winding of the starter relay will be energized so that the relay is operated to cause energization of the electric motor of the starter. The invention can be applied to a starter where the electromagnet pole is a sleeve encircling the shaft and itself encircled by the electromagnet winding. Other modifications are described.
