Abstract

1533978 Electric starter motor LUCAS ELECTRICAL CO Ltd 16 Jan 1976 [25 Jan 1975] 3352/75 Heading F1K To ensure that a solenoid assembly 21, whose armature 22 actuates a switch controlling the electric motor 12 of a starter motor as well as driving the pinion assembly 15 into and out of engagement with an engine starter ring, will operate said switch if the pinion assembly is prevented from engaging or disengaging the ring, a resilient lever assembly 24 inter-connects the pinion assembly and the armature so as to permit, by flexing, the required armature travel without movement of the pinion assembly, the lever assembly 24 having a pivot arrangement 28 such that the mechanical advantage of the lever assembly is reduced as the pinion is driven into the engagement position. The force provided by the flexed lever assembly ensure clean engagement/disengagement when the impediment to engagement/disengagement is removed. The lever assembly comprises a lever 25 and a support strip 26 arranged so that the support strip does not engage lugs 29a and thus is effective only in the engagement operation. The pivot assembly 28 may comprise a curved surface or two independent pivot points 33, 34 Fig. 2. The force applied by the lever assembly in the engaged position may be adjusted by an arrangement Fig. 3 replacing the extention 22a.
