An electric starter for an internal-combustion engine has a pinion connected with a shaft 17 of the starter by means of an over-running multiplate clutch 5, 6, which pinion is moved into engagement with the teeth of a toothed flywheel crown (not shown) there being provided in the starter an engagement sleeve 3 of the multiplate clutch, in which sleeve there is housed a shaft 4, carrying the pinion, the shaft and sleeve being helically grooved. The sleeve is mounted in a bearing 2 which in turn is housed in a front cover member 1 secured to the casing of the starter, while the other end of the shaft is mounted in a bearing 15 housed in a hollow shaft 17 which forms the spindle of the armature of the starter. The armature spindle is journalled in a bearing 16 which is housed in a partition 12 secured to the casing of the starter.
