Abstract
121,000. Bendix, V. Dec. 13, 1917. Turning-gear.-An engine-starter comprises a driving-member such as a pinion 5 and a control member 4 connected together and mounted for longitudinal and rotary movement upon rotation of a member 1. In the form shown, the pinion 5 is mounted loosely on the armature shaft 1 of an electric motor A and is connected by a coil spring 6 to the control member 4, which is threaded to engage a screw shaft 2 forming an extension of the shaft 1. A sleeve 11, mounted on the member 4 and sliding on the part 5<a> of the pinion,. prevents the spring 6 from wedging in the space 10. The parts may be so arranged that the movement of the pinion 5 into mesh with the engine member is in a direction away from the motor A. In a modification, the control member 4 is fixed on the screw shaft 2, which engages an internal thread in the armature shaft.
