Abstract

141,325. Eclipse Machine Co., (Assignees of McGrath, W. L.). April 9, 1919, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In an engine-starter comprising a driving member or pinion 3 mounted for longitudinal movement on and rotary movement with a rotary member or shaft 1, a follower 6 is yieldingly connected to the member 3 and its longitudinal movement is stopped before that of the member 3. In the form shown, the pinion 3 has internal threads narrower than the space between threads 1<a> on the shaft 1, which is driven by a motor or by hand. The follower 6 rotates freely on the shaft 1 and is connected to the pinion by an extensible coil spring 7. A light compression spring 9 is interposed between the motor casing and a thrust bearing 10 on the follower. On the rotation of the shaft 1, the pinion moves axially into mesh with the engine member 4, the threads 3<a>, 1<a> being held in contact by the spring 9, until the follower is stopped by a collar 1<c> on the shaft. The thread 1<a> then comes into engagement with the rear of the thread 3<a>, further movement of the pinion extends the spring 7, and the pinion is driven through the collar 1<c>, follower 6, and spring 7. If the pinion moves far enough to bear against a collar 5 on the shaft 1, it is then driven directly from the shaft. In a modification, the screw shaft is a sleeve slidably keyed on the shaft of the starting-motor under the control of a spring such as 9, and the threads of the shaft and pinion fit without relative movement.
