Turning-gear.-An engine-starter comprises a rotary shaft 3 carrying a helical spring 4 serving as a screw-thread, and a driving-member or pinion 5 mounted on the spring for longitudinal and rotary movement and also capable of longitudinal movement independent of that due to the spring. In the form shown, the space 7<a> between internal threads on the pinion is wider than the spring thread, and the threads are held in engagement by a light spring 8, which yields if the pinion teeth clash with those of the engine member 6<a>. The spring 8 is interposed between a collar 9 on the shaft 3 and a thrust bearing 10 connected to the collar by a sleeve 11 having a toothed flange sliding in grooves 9<a> in the collar. The relative movement between the pinion and the collar 9 is limited by the ends of the grooves 9<a>. At the end ot the movement of the pinion into mesh with the member 6<a>, a clutch jaw 7b on the pinion engages the free end 4<b> of the spring 4 and the pinion is driven through the spring, which is fixed at the outer end to the shaft 3. The shaft 3 may be a sleeve pinned to the armature shaft 1 of the starting-motor. In a modification, the meshing movement of the pinion is in a direction away from the motor and a spring such as 8 is anchored at one end to a fixed part of the motor and bears at the other end against the pinion without a thrust bearing.
