Abstract

Turning-gear.-The shaft b of the starting pinion g is in screw-threaded engagement at c with the hollow armature shaft a, and is acted on by an electro-magnetic or mechanical brake i to ensure axial displacement of the pinion when the motor is driven. The brake disk i is slidably keyed on the shaft b, and in the form shown it is held by a solenoid in engagement with a fixed member o. The motor and solenoid are controlled by a hand-actuated switch, which in three successive positions (1) supplies current to the motor through resistances, and to the solenoid: (2) supplies full current to the motor only; and (3) supplies the motor only through the resistances, assisting the automatic disengagement of the pinion g. There are three such resistances, which are cut in and out successively.
