Abstract
311,020. Royce, F. H. Feb. 14, 1928. Turning-gear.-In an electric starter in which axial movement of the motor armature a<a>, effected by magnetic force and against the reaction of a spring, moves a pinion a<8> into engagement with an engine gear a' and closes a switch d, a spring d' tends at all times to close the switch and is arranged not to react against the axial movement of the armature, the action of the spring being prevented except when the pinion is in engagement. As shown, the switch lever d has an arm d<6> normally bearing against the motor shaft a<7>. When the pinion a' is in mesh with the fly-wheel a<9>, the end of the shaft a<7> is in the position d<7>, releasing the arm d<e> and allowing the switch to close one of the controlling circuits of the starter.
