Abstract

Starting prime-movers, dynamo-electric machines and control circuits for.-In an electric starter in which a driving-member or pinion c is movable axially on the shaft of the starting motor b into engagement with an engine member d, a series of controlling circuits and electromagnets is arranged to effect the axial movement of the driving member and the closing of the main switch and to break automatically the circuit which effects the movement of the driving member, which is then free to be thrown out of engagement as soon as the engine starts. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the pinion c is connected to the shaft of the starting motor by a spiral key f<3>. The main circuit is indicated by unfeathered arrows and three controlling circuits in parallel by arrows having one, two, and three feathers respectively. On pressing a pushswitch h, the first controlling circuit is completed through the battery a, an electromagnet f for moving the pinion c, a switch e, and the motor b. The third circuit, through an electromagnet i, is also completed so that, after a time determined by a dashpot i<2>, a switch g in the second circuit is closed. This circuit includes an electromagnet e<2> which rocks the switch e, breaking the circuit of the electromagnet f and closing the main circuit. In a modification, the circuit of the electromagnet e<2> is closed by a contact carried by the core of the electromagnet a, and the circuit of the electromagnet f is broken directly by the core of the electromagnet i by means of a two-way switch.
