Abstract

573,037. Engine turning-gear. JACK & HEINTZ, Inc. Oct. 13, 1943, No. 16825. Convention date, July 7, 1942. [Class 7 (v)] An engine starter comprises a motor, means for lifting the brushes on the motor and a single electromagnetic means for controlling means for releasing the brushes and controlling the clutch which connects the starter to the engine. A fly-wheel 5, Fig. 1, adapted to be rotated by a motor 15, 16 or by hand cranking, drives a clutch member 4 through reduction gearing in a housing 3. To engage the engine, a push rod 10 passing axially through the gearing, flywheel and motor is depressed by a rocking lever 54 having a depending arm 53, engageable by an arm 51 on a hand lever 49, and an arm opposite that engaging the push rod 10, engaged by a plunger 43. When the engine is to be started by hand cranking, the lever 49 is turned anti-clockwise and the arm 51 in addition to depressing the push rod 10 momentarily, turns a latch member 39, Fig. 6, linked at 38 to a double segment gear 35 which rotates simultaneously sectors 36 on shafts 37. The shafts 37 carry cams 27, Fig. 2, operative through rollers 25 on arms 24 to lift spring fingers 20 against the action of springs 21 away from the bushes 18 of the motor and in some cases to draw the bushes themselves away from the commutator to break the electric circuit. As the latch member 39 moves, a cam surface 45 on an arm 42 thereof engages beneath the plunger 43 which, when the arm has passed it, snaps back into a locking position beside the arm 42. A hand-cranking mechanisrn acting through an over-running clutch in a housing 72, Fig. 1, is now operated to rotate the motor armature 16 and fly-wheel 5 and finally the rod 10 is depressed again, by a repeat movement of the lever 49, to engage the clutch member 4 with the engine, the friction this time holding the clutch engaged. For starting the engine by the motor, a switch in the pilot's cockpit is closed to excite a solenoid 44, Fig. 2, associated with the plunger 43, to lift the plunger clear of the latch 39, whereupon the springs 21 return the brushes 18 to their operative positions on the commutator 17. At the same time, the push rod 10 is depressed momentarily to engage the clutch member 4 temporarily' with the engine. The pilot then closes a second switch energizing a relay solenoid 85 which closes a switch 86, 87 in the circuit of the motor. When the flywheel 5 has attained its desired speed, the first switch is again closed and the clutch member 4 engaged with the engine as occurred with the hand-cranking mechanism. The brushes 18 and their associated parts are mounted in pairs, each pair being carried by an insulating block 113 and this arrangement leaves space for two wells 80, 81 which are disposed in oppositely located lobes 103, 104 at the end of the device remote from the clutch member 4. The well 80 accommodates the relay solenoid 85 and the well 81 the solenoid 44. The lobes are integral with a cover-plate formed with depending lugs to position the cam-shafts 37 and the double segment gear 35.
