Abstract
404,725. Turning-gear. KAUFMANN, A., Zuchwil, Solothurn, Switzerland. July 2, 1932, No. 18760. [Class 7 (v).] In an electric starter in which the pinion 2 is mounted on an axially displaceable shaft 1 extending through the armature of the starting motor and connected to the armature shaft 20 by an overrunning clutch 21 and a multiple-disc clutch 22, a device is provided for turning the shaft 1 if the teeth of the pinion 2 clash with those of the engine flywheel. The shaft 1 is displaced axially by a lever 17 bearing against a conducting bridge 13 carrying a contact 15 for engagement with a contact 16 to switch on the motor ; the bridge 13 engages the shaft 1 by means of a rod 18 and spring 19. A steep-threaded nut 4 engages a sleeve 3 fixed on the shaft 1, the nut being engaged by a pair of brake discs 6, 7 sliding on bolts 14 connected to the bridge 13. If the teeth of the pinion 2 clash with those of the flywheel, the nut 4 is displaced axially in relation to the shaft 1 and imparts a turning movement to the shaft to effect meshing. When the pinion is fully in mesh, a pawl 9 pivoted on the disc 6 encounters a shoulder 11 on a rod 10 and separates the discs 6, 7, allowing free rotation of the shaft 1 and the pinion. A slight further movement of the lever 17 and the bridge 13 then closes the starter switch contacts 15, 16.
