Abstract

411,277. Turning - gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A. May 5, 1933, No. 13108. Convention date, May 6, 1932. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter a driving shaft, rotated by power means, is connected to an engine engaging member initially through a frictional driving connection and afterwards through a positive connection. As shown, the shaft 9 of an electric starting motor 8 carries a flywheel 11 and is connected by gearing 13, 14 to a hollow driving shaft 15, which carries a toothed clutch member 19 and a friction clutch member 20 normally held in its forward position by coil springs 22. The members 19, 20 are adapted respectively to engage clutch teeth and a friction surface on a member 24 carried by a shaft 25, a threaded portion 25b of which carries a nut 29 connected by a drive spring 30 to a smooth-bored pinion 31 slidable into mesh with an engine member 32. The motor 8 is switched on by a lever 42 connected to a switch contact 45 and operated by depressing a pedal 37, and a rod 52 connected to the lever 42 withdraws the clutch members 19, 20 from the member 24. On releasing the pedal, the contact 45 opens the circuit of the motor, and a spring 51 causes the rod 52 to bring the clutch members 20, 19 successively into engagement with the member 24. The shaft 25 is then driven by the momentum of the motor 8 and flywheel 11 and the pinion 31 is moved axially into driving engagement with the engine member 32.
