Turning-gear.-In an electric starter for motorvehicle engines in which the starter pinion 1 has a screw-threaded spindle 2 in engagement with a threaded sleeve 3 within the hollow shaft of the armature and resilient. means such as a spring 8 takes up the shock when the pinion teeth clash with those of the engine flywheel at starting, the drive is transmitted from the armature shaft to the pinion through the spring 8 and a laminated friction coupling 4. When the teeth clash, the sleeve 3 moves backwards on the spindle 2, compressing a spring 7, until the spring 8 encounters a stop nut 9 on the spindle 2. The pinion is then rotated until its teeth are in position to mesh with those of the flywheel, when the sleeve 3 and the pinion are moved axially by the spring 7. If the engine turns backwards at starting, the shock is taken up by the spring 8 before the coupling 4 comes into play.
