Abstract

623,349. Turning-gear. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and ROBINSON, C. E. May 3, 1947, No. 11958. [Class 7 (v)] In an electrically-operated starter for internalcombustion engines of the kind in which a nut in axially movable connection with a screw threaded member on or rotatable by the starter spindle is adapted to move a pinion into or out of engagement with a gear wheel on or associated with the engine crank-shaft, there is provided the combination of a metal sleeve and a pair of rubber or like bushes respectively connecting the nut and pinion to the sleeve. The axial movement of a nut 3 which co-operates with a screw shaft 2 secured or formed on the power shaft 1 is limited by shoulders 4, 6 whilst a spring 7 is positioned between the nut 3 and an abutment on the shoulder 6. A metal sleeve 8, which is bonded to the nut 3 by a rubber bush, has a toothed clutch connection 15 with another sleeve 10 that is similarly bonded to the hub of the pinion 13, which latter is axially slidable upon the power shaft 1 into and out of mesh with an engine gear 17. A metal housing 16 encloses the coupling. It is stated that two metal sleeves 8, 10 may be replaced by a single member.
