Abstract
382,405. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. Oct. 9, 1931, No. 28120. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1930. [Classes 7 (iv) and 7 (v).] In an inertia starter in which a flywheel is set in rotation by hand or by an electric motor and its energy is transmitted to a driving member through reduction gearing, a switch on the dashboard of a motor vehicle or the instrument board of an air craft is arranged to control from a single point the energization of the motor, the engagement of the driving member with the engine crank shaft, and the supply of electric current in an auxiliary ignition circuit during starting. The flywheel 11, Fig. 1, may be driven from the electric motor 44 through a clutch (not shown), and is connected through toothed and planetary gearing and a multiple-plate friction clutch 27 to a clutch jaw 25 movable axially into engagement with the clutch jaw 26 of the engine. The toothed gearing comprises a pinion 13 on the flywheel shaft, pinions 14, 16 on a bellshaped member 15, and an internally toothed gear 17 integral with a sun pinion 21. Planet wheels 22 rotatable on the end of a barrel member 20 mesh with the sun pinion 21 and a fixed internal gear 23. The barrel 20 is connected through the clutch plates 27 to a nut 28 engaging a threaded shaft 34 on which the clutch jaw 25 is longitudinally splined. The flywheel 11 can be set in rotation manually by means of a cranking shaft (not shown) driving through a bevel gear 43 on a shaft 19 integral with the barrel member 20. The clutch jaw 25 is moved into engagement with the jaw 26 by an axial rod 40 pivotally connected to the arm 81 of a rock shaft 79, on the upper end of which is mounted a bell crank 74 actuated by the control switch 45, Figs. 2 and 5. This comprises a spring-controlled rod 48 connected by a pin and slot 76 and a rod 75 to the bell crank 74. The rod 48 is provided with a metal disc 59 for engagement with contacts 50, 51 in the circuit 55, 56 of a solenoid switch 52 for the motor 44, so that inward movement of the rod 48 switches on the motor 44 to set the flywheel in rotation, and outward movement of the rod effects the engagement of the jaw clutch 25, 26 in order to start the engine. For effecting the ignition at starting, the bell crank 74 is connected through a spring 109, threaded sleeve 110, and rod 107 to an insulating rod 105 normally bearing against the spring armature 98 of an ignition coil 92, the secondary winding 93 of which is connected to the spark plugs 104. On the outward movement of the control rod 48, the release of the spring armature 98 by the rod 105 allows the ignition coil to come into operation.
