Abstract

120,465. Bendix, V. Nov. 26, 1917. Turning-gear.-In an electric starter of.the kind comprising a threaded pinion mounted on a screw shaft driven through a yielding device such as a spring, the screw shaft 13 is driven by a pinion 9 loose on the armature shaft 1 and meshing with a gear 11 mounted on the screw shaft. The pinion 9 is connected by a spring 6 to the armature shaft, and a flange 10 on the pinion bears against the side of the gear 11. The shaft 13 is capable of slight endlong movement in its bearings, so that, if the teeth of the pinion 14 clash with those of the engine member 15, the shaft 13 may yield axially against the tension of the spring 6.
