Abstract

1412989 Starting internal combustion engines NIPPON DENSO CO Ltd 16 Nov 1972 [16 Nov. 1971] 52873/72 Heading H2H A circuit for protecting the electric starter 5 of an internal combustion engine comprises a relay having a contact 15 and a coil 16 which is energized when the alternator 9 supplies an output voltage. When an ignition switch 2 connects the battery 1 to a contact 3, current is supplied to a field winding 12 via a voltage regulator 8 and to a series circuit including a resistor 23 and a temperature dependent resistor 22. The voltage at the junction of the resistors is insufficient to switch on transistor 17 due to the low resistance of the resistor 22 so that the coil 16 is not energized and the contact 15 remains closed. When the switch 2 engages a contact 4 the starter relay 7a is energized thus closing a contactor 7 to rotate the starter motor. The alternator therefore also rotates and the voltage at its star point 13 charges capacitors 20, 21 thereby switching on the transistor to energize the coil 16, the alternator current having increased the temperature and hence the resistance, of the resistor 22. The contact 15 is therefore opened to prevent operation of the starter motor when the engine is running.
