Abstract

An electric starting motor for an internal combustion engine comprises a device for automatically disengaging the starting shaft when the ignition rotation speed of the engine has been reached. In the arrangement shown, the starting motor 1 has a shunt winding 2 in parallel with the armature 3 and series winding 4. In operation, closure of a starting switch 10 causes current to flow from a battery 11 through a capacitor 9 to a relay 7 which closes contacts 8. Current now flows through a further relay 13 to close a starting magnet switch 14. At the same time, the starting shaft, which includes a longitudinally displaceable meshing pinion, engages the engine and a high current flows in the armature circuit. The resulting voltage drop across the winding 4 switches on a transistor 6 to maintain current in the relay 7. As the speed builds up, the current in the armature falls, and hence the bias on the transistor is reduced until the current through it is insufficient to hold the relay 7. The contacts 8 and 14 now open and the starting pinion is disengaged.
