Abstract

176,114. Rogers, F. H., (Eclipse Machine Co.). Nov. 29, 1920. Turning-gear.-An electric or other starter comprises driving and driven shafts 11, 14, a pinion 10 mounted on the shaft 11 for rotary and axial movement and meshing with a gear 17 fast on the shaft 14, a driving member or pinion 18 mounted on the shaft 14 for rotary and axialmovement, and means for transmitting the axial movement of the pinion 10 to the pinion 18. In the form shown, the axial movement of the pinion 10 is effected automatically by helical teeth on the pinion 10 and the gear 17. The pinions 10, 18 slide on keys on the shafts 11, 14 and are connected by a double fork 26, 27 mounted on a rook-shaft 25. The fork 26 is engaged by a groove 28 in the extension 12 of the pinion 10, and the fork 27 engages a groove 29 in a shell 21 slidably connected to an extension 20 of the pinion 18, a spring 22 being interposed.
