[Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter comprising a fly-wheel b which can be driven manually or by an electric motor and is connected by transmission mechanism to a starter pinion a, the transversely spaced axes of the manually operable shaft n and the electric motor k are parallel to each other and to the axis of the flywheel b, and the shaft n and motor k are both in geared connection with the flywheel. As shown, the shaft n drives through epicyclic gearing o, p an internally toothed wheel m rotatable on the shaft n and connected through spur gearing e, f, g to a pinion d keyed on the shaft c of the flywheel b, and the shaft of the spur wheel e is coupled to the armature shaft i of the motor k. The starter pinion a is connected to the flywheel b by means of a clutch x and epicyclic gearing y, w, v. The electric motor k and the manual driving mechanism are enclosed in a casing q mounted on the wall h of the casing 8 enclosing the flywheel and gearing y, w, v, the bearings for the gearing e, f, g being arranged in an axial projection r of the wall h.
