Abstract

1,025,782. Starting. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. July 13, 1962 [July 14, 1961], No. 25529/61. Heading F1K. A starter turbine 1, driving a compressor 3 feeding turbine combustion chamber 2, is coupled to its compressor 3 and to the starter output shaft 8 by a differential gear 5. The turbine is coupled to the input shaft 6 of the differential gear 5, the output shaft of which is coupled through gearing 7a of the compressor 3 whilst the output shaft 8 is coupled to an hydraulic pump 10 adapted to drive starter motors 13. An auxiliary electric starting motor 15 is connected through an overrunning clutch 16 to the compressor gearing 7a, which gearing also drives a fuel pump and governor 4 feeding the combustion chamber 2. At starting the shaft 8 is stationary and operation of the starter 15 drives the compressor 3 and turbine 1. When the turbine is operative the torque of the output shaft 8 is sufficient to drive the engine through the hydraulic drive 10, 13, and as the speed of shaft 8 increases the turbine 1 is accelerated, to keep the speed of the compressor 3 substantially constant, by increasing the fuel supply from the pump 4. A remote controlled shut-off valve 20 in the hydraulic circuit may be operated to hold the shaft 8 stationary until the turbine 1 is operative and in a multi-engine unit a selector switch 12 may be operated by a control 17 to select the individual engines for starting. A lubricating pump 22 is driven from the shaft 7.
