Abstract
985,331. Gear motors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. June 15, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 21087/60. Heading F1F. An hydraulic engine starter comprises a motor housing, a main gear 1 in the housing and provided with an output shaft and a sprag clutch (Fig. 2, not shown) on the shaft, and two or more further gears 2, 3 in fluid-tight engagement with the main gear, there being valves 16, 17, which may be set as shown to cause the gears 2, 3 to operate in parallel between an input 13 and an output 15, or (Fig. 4, not shown) so that the valve 16 is closed and the valve 17 connects passage 6 to passage 5 and the gears 2, 3 operate in series, thus providing a higher output speed at limited liquid flows. In a modification, valves 16, 17 are replaced by a valve 19 which in the full live position gives operation of the gears 2, 3 in parallel and in the dotted line position 20 leaves the gear 2 alone operative. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the motor is mounted in the nose cone of an aeroplane gas turbine engine nacelle coaxially with the engine.
